Description.

The G&G Armament TR80 DMR GT Advanced is a long-format Rifle built for the designated marksman role, but it takes a noticeably different route from the usual stretched M4 or SR25. This airsoft rifle combines a 475mm inner barrel, electronic trigger system and adjustable DMR furniture with G&G's own distinctive receiver design. The result is an Airsoft AEG that looks purpose-built rather than simply an assault rifle with a longer front end bolted onto it.

Starting at the muzzle, there's a steel multi-port flash hider fitted to a 14mm CCW male thread. That common thread gives you plenty of choice if you want to swap over to a compatible tracer unit or suppressor. Behind it sits an 18.5-inch fluted aluminium outer barrel. The fluting suits the precision-rifle styling nicely while helping keep some unnecessary weight out of what is already a substantial airsoft gun.

The long CNC-machined aluminium handguard provides M-LOK slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, so there's ample room for a bipod, grip or other compatible accessories. A 20mm Picatinny rail runs along the top and continues onto the receiver. For a DMR, that's exactly what you want: loads of usable rail space for a scope without having to play Tetris with the mounts.

One particularly neat detail is the hop-up adjustment. Rather than hiding the control behind an ejection port, G&G places the adjuster at the front of the dummy gas block, where it can be reached without opening anything up. The system works with the TR80's 475mm, 6.08mm inner barrel, and the supplied information recommends 0.25g BBs. Testing data lists approximately 330 FPS, plus or minus 10%, using 0.20g ammunition.

Moving back, the high-density polymer receiver helps stop this long BB Gun becoming needlessly cumbersome. Controls are ambidextrous, including the magazine release and SAFE/SEMI selector, while the charging handle can be swapped between the left and right sides. The semi-flat ported trigger also suits the TR80's intended role, giving your finger a broad, uncomplicated contact point for repeated semi-auto shots.

Inside is where the TR80 becomes considerably more interesting. The gearbox uses 18:1 steel gears running on 8mm steel ball-bearing bushings, paired with G&G's Orange 25K IRFIT high-speed motor. A quick-change spring system is also fitted. More importantly, the electronic system can be programmed using the supplied wireless remote, with adjustment for pre-cocking, three trigger-sensitivity levels, the bolt-stop function and system diagnostics.

The stop-firing-on-empty feature is a nice bit of realism. When a compatible magazine runs dry, the AEG stops cycling rather than happily firing away at nothing. After inserting a loaded magazine, press the bolt catch or operate the charging handle to get back into the game. The function can also be switched off through the wireless controller if you'd rather keep things simple.

At the rear is G&G's GOS-V12 stock, and there's a lot going on here. The stock folds to the side using a conductive hinge, so the electrical connection isn't dependent on loose wiring passing awkwardly through the folding joint. Length of pull is adjustable, as are the cheek riser and butt plate. There's even a folding, length-adjustable monopod underneath. Fold the monopod away and its mounting section doubles as a 20mm rail. Slightly bonkers? Perhaps. Useful? Absolutely.

The battery compartment is accessed through the butt plate and the TR80 is rear-wired with a Mini-Tamiya connector. The supplied information specifies 11.1V LiPo power and notes that battery space is limited, with a compact PDW-style battery being the practical choice.

One thing worth knowing before buying is that this is a more advanced platform than a basic skirmish AEG. If you split the receiver for servicing or upgrades, G&G's sector gear reset procedure must be followed before reassembly and operation. The gearbox should not be cycled while the receiver is split except as instructed by that procedure. In other words, this isn't the gun to attack with a screwdriver first and read the manual afterwards.

At around 3.4kg and with its long barrel, adjustable stock and scope-ready rail, the TR80 feels every inch the designated marksman platform. For an airsofter who spends more time watching lanes and picking shots than charging through doorways, its combination of ergonomics, electronics and unusual styling makes for an interesting alternative to the familiar DMR crowd.
