What Is a UKARA?

UKARA (United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association) registration is a system used by UK airsoft retailers to help them comply with the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 (VCRA). It is not a licence, a membership card, or proof that someone has special legal rights. Instead, it is a way of showing that a person has a legitimate reason—known in UK law as a valid defence—to buy a Realistic Imitation Firearm (RIF) for airsoft.

In the UK, anyone can generally buy a brightly coloured two-tone airsoft gun, as it is less likely to be mistaken for a real firearm. However, buying a realistic-looking airsoft gun is more restricted. The law does not make it illegal to own one, but it does restrict the sale of new Realistic Imitation Firearms unless the buyer has a recognised valid defence.

For airsoft players, the most common defence is being an active airsoft skirmisher. To demonstrate this, a player usually needs to attend the same insured airsoft site at least three times over a period of no less than 56 days. Once these conditions are met, the airsoft site can confirm that the player is a regular participant and submit their details for UKARA registration.

When someone is registered, their details are added to the UKARA database of active players. If they later buy a realistic airsoft gun from a participating retailer, the retailer can check the UKARA database to confirm that the customer has a recognised valid defence under the VCRA. This allows the retailer to verify that the sale is legal.

What UKARA Does Not Do

It is important to understand what UKARA registration does not do. It does not:

• Give permission to carry an airsoft gun in public.
• Allow someone to use an airsoft gun irresponsibly.
• Replace common-sense transport and storage practices.
• Override any other laws relating to imitation firearms or public safety.

Airsoft guns should always be transported in a secure case or gun bag, unloaded, and only taken directly to or from an appropriate venue or another legitimate destination.

Is UKARA the Only Way to Buy a RIF?

Although UKARA is the best-known airsoft valid defence scheme, it is not the only way to demonstrate a valid defence.
