Description.

The Wolverine MTW AK-105 HPA Rifle in Black takes the engineering behind Wolverine's established Modular Training Weapon platform and puts it into a proper AK-shaped package. More importantly, this isn't simply an AK AEG shell with an HPA engine dropped into the old V3 gearbox space. Wolverine has designed the MTW AK as a native HPA airsoft rifle, allowing the engine, feed system, Hop-Up and barrel assembly to work together as one platform rather than as a collection of conversion parts.

That's a fairly important distinction if you've spent any time around converted HPA AKs. A conversion can shoot brilliantly when everything lines up, but getting the nozzle, Hop-Up chamber and magazine feed position to play nicely together isn't always as straightforward as it sounds. Tiny alignment differences matter. Wolverine's approach with this airsoft assault rifle is to remove much of that uncertainty at the design stage, rather than asking the owner to tune around it afterwards.

At the centre of the gun sits Wolverine's INFERNO XTS HPA engine. Instead of using a conventional electric motor, gears, piston and spring like an Airsoft AEG, the XTS meters compressed air for each shot through its electronically controlled HPA system. Fewer reciprocating mechanical components means there's less going on inside the receiver every time you pull the trigger. The result is the immediate response and repeatable cycling that have made HPA systems popular with players who care about consistency and trigger feel.

The clever bit isn't simply the engine, though. Wolverine's patent-pending intrinsic alignment system uses a purpose-designed CNC-machined aluminium and steel trunnion together with the engine chassis to maintain the relationship between the HPA engine and barrel assembly. In plain English, the nozzle needs to meet the Hop-Up in the same place, in the same way, shot after shot. If those parts sit slightly off-centre, even expensive components can produce disappointing feeding or inconsistent BB flight.

By making that alignment part of the MTW AK's structure, rather than relying on the tolerances of an old gearbox shell, Wolverine has attacked one of the awkward areas of aftermarket HPA conversions directly. It's the sort of engineering detail that isn't especially glamorous on a specification sheet, but experienced HPA players will immediately understand why it matters.

Externally, Wolverine hasn't forgotten that an AK-105 should actually feel like an AK. The receiver set is stamped steel and carries the classic WA logo, giving the rifle the weight and character you'd expect from this style of platform. Overall weight is listed at 2.76kg, or 6.1lb. That's enough mass to feel substantial without turning the gun into something you'll resent carrying halfway through a long game.

Up front is the recognisable AK-105 configuration. The supplied LCT steel AK-105 flash hider mounts to 24mm CW threads, while the rifle also offers LCT-spec handguard compatibility. That's useful if you're already familiar with LCT AK furniture or want to alter the front end later. The front sight post is adjustable too, so the traditional AK hardware hasn't merely been stuck there for decoration.

Move towards the rear and things become distinctly more MTW-like. Wolverine uses a steel buffer tube/MTW stock adapter rather than committing the rifle to one fixed AK stock arrangement. Mil-spec buffer tubes are supported, as are WRAITH and QUAKE MTW stock systems when used with the appropriate adapter line. AR-style sling plates are another compatible option. It gives you plenty of scope to set the rifle up around your own body armour, mask and preferred length of pull instead of simply accepting whatever stock dimensions the factory picked.

The pistol grip can also be changed, with real-steel grips listed as compatible when modified appropriately for the airline. That's an important little caveat: this remains an HPA airsoft gun, so the air supply has to get where it needs to go. Don't assume every grip can simply be screwed straight on without accounting for the line.

One particularly neat feature is the Picatinny rear sight rail. AK optics mounting can become a rabbit hole of side mounts, railed dust covers and different mounting standards, but Wolverine gives you a straightforward Picatinny location for an optic at the rear. For a modern AK-105 build, a compact red dot there makes plenty of sense and avoids turning the rifle into an accessory Christmas tree.

Inside, the INFERNO XTS is controlled by Wolverine's BLINC Bluetooth® FCU. This is where the MTW AK becomes considerably smarter than the traditional stamped-steel exterior suggests. Using the Bluetooth system, you can adjust settings including dwell, rate of fire and burst behaviour, then save custom profiles. So while the outside says old-school AK, the electronics underneath are very much twenty-first century.

Dwell is essentially the amount of time the system supplies air during the firing cycle. Correctly setting it helps the HPA engine use the air it needs without wasting excess pressure. The BLINC system can also auto-tune dwell when paired with a compatible Acetech Bluetooth chronograph. Wireless firmware updates are supported as well, and Wolverine specifies ultra-low battery consumption for the FCU. Battery input is JST 6-8V.

There's another feature here that's particularly interesting for players who want more realistic handling: programmable magazine capacity and simulated empty-mag detection. Wolverine combines this with a functional charging handle and detector board. The feature is listed as BETA, so it's worth keeping expectations sensible, but the concept is excellent. Set the system around a chosen magazine capacity and the rifle can simulate running empty rather than simply continuing to dry-fire indefinitely.

That changes the rhythm of the airsoft gun. Instead of merely counting BBs or waiting for nothing to come out of the barrel, you're encouraged to work the rifle and reload it. For training-style use or players who enjoy more involved gun handling, it's a much more interesting approach than an ordinary electronic counter hidden somewhere inside the receiver.

Wolverine has paid attention to the physical reload as well. The engineered magwell is designed to prevent excessive magazine over-travel. Anyone familiar with the AK's rock-and-lock magazine system knows that a hurried reload can occasionally turn into a wrestling match if the magazine doesn't index cleanly. Controlling its travel helps make the movement more repeatable without removing the distinctly AK-style reload.

Better still, you aren't tied to an obscure proprietary magazine. The MTW AK-105 is stated to work with most standard AK AEG magazines. That's a big practical advantage for an airsofter who already owns AK mid-caps, and it also gives you a much broader choice of magazine capacities and styles. As always with the enormous number of aftermarket AK magazines available, individual fit can vary, but broad AEG magazine compatibility is a very welcome starting point.

The feeding path uses a stainless steel feed tube, while the rifle has an adjustable Hop-Up and a 380mm inner barrel. Hop adjustment lets you tune the backspin placed on the BB, which is critical for getting a stable trajectory from your chosen ammunition. With an HPA system providing repeatable air delivery behind it, getting the Hop-Up and BB weight dialled in properly is where you'll see the rifle settle into its best performance.

Trigger adjustment is provided too. That's especially useful on an HPA platform because you're not mechanically dragging a traditional gearbox through its firing cycle with every trigger pull. Once set to your preference, the combination of the electronic control system and INFERNO XTS can give the MTW AK the short, immediate response that HPA users tend to expect.

The operating pressure range is listed at 60-160 PSI. As with any adjustable HPA BB Gun or airsoft rifle, pressure should be set responsibly and the rifle chronographed for the BB weight you're actually using. More pressure isn't automatically better. Your goal is a stable, efficient setup that complies with the energy limit at your site. Once you've reached that point, chasing numbers for the sake of it achieves very little.

Serviceability is another area Wolverine has thought about. The dummy cleaning rod doubles as an integrated takedown tool, which is a lovely little detail. Rather than carrying another loose tool around, part of the AK's external furniture serves a genuine maintenance purpose. The rifle also retains MTW-spec compatibility for the engine, Hop-Up body and inner barrel, making the platform far less of a sealed black box if you want to service or alter it later.

There is useful external cross-compatibility too. LCT-spec handguards and selector switches are supported, while mil-spec buffer tubes and compatible AR-style sling plates open up further configuration choices. That's a sensible balance. Wolverine hasn't tried to make every component proprietary just because it could.

What I like most about the MTW AK-105 concept is that it hasn't simply copied the outward appearance of an AK and called the job done. The stamped steel receiver gives you the physical character, yes, but underneath it Wolverine has redesigned the parts that matter for HPA operation. Engine alignment, feeding, magazine positioning and electronic control have all been considered as elements of the same system.

That makes this a very different proposition from buying an electric AK and converting it later. A conversion still has its place, particularly if you already own a favourite donor rifle, but the MTW AK-105 is for the player who wants a native HPA platform from the beginning. No redundant gears. No conventional V3 gearbox architecture sitting around an engine it was never originally designed to hold. Just an AK built around the way an HPA system actually works.

And it still looks like an AK-105 rather than a science project. That's important. Underneath you've got Bluetooth configuration, electronic fire control, an INFERNO XTS engine and programmable magazine behaviour; externally, it's stamped steel, an LCT flash hider and familiar AK lines. Old boots, new socks, you might say.

For the airsofter who has wanted MTW performance but never really wanted an AR-style rifle, the Wolverine MTW AK-105 fills a very specific gap. It's technical without being unnecessarily complicated, configurable without losing its AK identity, and designed from day one around HPA rather than adapting an existing Airsoft AEG gearbox afterwards. That last point is really what defines it.
