Description.
The Umarex Glock G17 Gen5 MOS is a fully licensed gas blowback airsoft pistol that takes the familiar full-size G17 platform and adds one of the features modern airsofters increasingly want: an optics-ready MOS slide. Rather than buying a standard G17 and then hunting around for an aftermarket slide or red-dot mounting solution, the MOS system is integrated into the pistol from the start. Add the official GLOCK trademarks, metal slide and Gen5-style polymer frame, and you've got an airsoft gun that stays very close to the appearance and handling of the modern G17.
This is a Green Gas GBB Pistol with a full blowback action. Each trigger pull fires a BB and drives the metal slide backwards before it returns into battery for the next shot. That gives the G17 a much more mechanical feel than a non-blowback BB Gun. The moving metal slide adds noticeable feedback in the hand, and there's that sharp snap from the action which makes a decent gas pistol so satisfying to run. Not ridiculous recoil. Just enough movement to make it feel alive.
The MOS slide is the big story here. MOS stands for Modular Optic System, and the top of the slide is factory prepared for mounting compatible miniature red-dot sights. Remove the cover plate and the appropriate adapter arrangement can be used for a suitable optic. Adapter plates and the optic itself are typically separate, so check the pistol manual and the mounting footprint of your chosen sight before ordering parts.
For CQB, practical pistol shooting and other short-range games, a correctly zeroed red dot can be genuinely useful rather than simply looking cool. Instead of lining up three separate points – rear sight, front sight and target – you're bringing a single illuminated aiming point onto the target. Once you're used to presenting the pistol consistently, it can make target transitions noticeably quicker. The MOS setup also leaves you free to run the pistol with its conventional sights when you don't want an optic fitted.
Moving down from the metal slide, the frame follows the Gen5 layout. One of the most obvious differences compared with earlier GLOCK generations is the lack of moulded finger grooves on the front strap. Personally, that's a welcome change on an airsoft handgun because hands don't come in one standard size. Without fixed grooves telling your fingers exactly where they ought to sit, the grip feels less restrictive and is easier to settle into naturally.
The textured polymer grip provides the familiar GLOCK-style hold, while the full-size G17 dimensions give you plenty of frame to work with. This is not a chopped-down compact pretending to be a primary pistol. It's the full-length platform, which is one reason the G17 remains such a common sight around airsoft sites. There's enough gun to establish a solid two-handed grip, yet the layout remains straightforward and uncomplicated.
Gen5 controls are represented too, including an ambidextrous slide stop. That's particularly handy for left-handed players, but it isn't exclusively a lefty feature. Depending on how you manipulate a pistol, being able to access the control from either side can be useful during reloads and handling drills. It also keeps the external layout much closer to the Gen5 platform this replica is based upon.
The familiar GLOCK-style trigger safety is present as well. The central safety blade forms part of the trigger itself and must be deliberately depressed as the trigger is pulled. It's a small detail, but an important one on a licensed replica because it's part of what makes the controls feel recognisably GLOCK rather than merely GLOCK-shaped.
Up front, the dust cover includes the familiar accessory rail. That gives you somewhere sensible to install a compatible pistol light or other suitable rail-mounted accessory. For indoor and low-light games, a compact weapon light paired with the MOS red-dot capability can turn the G17 Gen5 into a very capable CQB airsoft pistol without hanging a mountain of kit from it.
Internally, the pistol uses an adjustable hop-up. Hop-up applies controlled backspin to the BB as it travels through the barrel, helping counter its natural drop and producing a flatter trajectory. Getting the setting right is far more important than simply chasing the highest possible FPS figure. Set the hop for the BB weight you're actually using, test it at a sensible distance, then make small adjustments until the flight path settles down.
The quoted velocity range for this model is 251-300 FPS. As with any Green Gas airsoft pistol, actual output can vary with temperature, gas pressure, BB weight, magazine temperature and how quickly you're firing. A gas magazine that's been sitting outside on a cold January morning isn't going to behave exactly like the same magazine on a warm summer afternoon. That's simply the nature of gas-powered airsoft guns.
The metal slide and polymer frame are also a sensible combination for this platform. You get the weight and movement of a metal blowback assembly on top while retaining the polymer lower frame associated with the GLOCK design. When the slide cycles, it gives the pistol a crisp physical response without making the entire gun unnecessarily heavy.
Official licensing is another significant part of this particular G17. Umarex has reproduced the pistol with authentic GLOCK branding rather than using vague markings or a made-up model name. For a player who only cares about sending BBs downrange, that might not be the deciding factor. For collectors, loadout builders and airsofters who appreciate faithful replicas, however, proper trademarks make a noticeable difference.
It also means the overall appearance hasn't been unnecessarily messed around with. You get the clean, businesslike Gen5 profile, recognisable frame shape and modern MOS slide rather than an exaggerated race-gun interpretation. There's something refreshingly purposeful about it. Fit an optic if you need one, add a light if the game calls for it, and otherwise leave it alone.
One compatibility point needs particular attention: VFC magazines do not work with this pistol. Don't assume that every magazine labelled for a G17 or GLOCK-style GBB will fit and function correctly. Gas magazine compatibility can vary between manufacturers and internal systems even when the external pistol platform looks virtually identical. If you're buying spare magazines, make sure they're specifically confirmed as compatible with this Umarex G17 Gen5 MOS Model 2.6563.
For skirmishing, the combination of full-size ergonomics, semi-automatic operation, adjustable hop and an optics-ready slide makes a lot of sense. Run it as a conventional secondary alongside an Airsoft AEG, or build it into a more dedicated pistol setup with a compatible red dot and light. It doesn't force you down either route. Straight out of the box, the core layout remains simple enough for someone buying their first serious GBB pistol while offering features that experienced airsofters will actually make use of.
Gas blowback ownership does require a little more attention than looking after a basic spring BB pistol. Keep the magazine seals in good condition, use suitable gas and lubricants, and periodically clean the barrel and inspect the moving components. The MOS mounting hardware is also worth checking occasionally if you fit an optic, particularly after plenty of blowback cycles. A loose red dot is about as useful as a chocolate sight post.
As an overall package, the Umarex Glock G17 Gen5 MOS brings together the bits that make the current G17 platform interesting without burying it under unnecessary extras. You've got a metal blowback slide, polymer Gen5 frame, ambidextrous control, accessory rail, adjustable hop-up and, most importantly, the factory MOS optics arrangement. For an airsofter after a modern full-size GLOCK-style sidearm rather than another generic gas BB Gun, this is a particularly well-specified option.
