Description.

The S&T Armament AKS-74N Sports Line is an electric airsoft assault rifle based around one of the most recognisable folding-stock AK variants. It combines the classic AKS-74 profile, faux wood furniture and steel skeleton stock with a largely high-density polymer body. The result is an airsoft gun that looks properly old-school without feeling like you've strapped a railway sleeper across your chest. At approximately 2.42kg, it is noticeably easier to carry through a long skirmish than many full-steel AK replicas.

Starting at the business end, the 16.3-inch alloy outer barrel wears the familiar AK-74-style muzzle brake. Underneath you'll find a 14mm CCW male thread, so compatible tracer units, suppressors and alternative flash hiders can be fitted. Inside sits a 420mm, 6.02mm tightbore barrel. That's a useful specification straight from the box, offering good air efficiency and plenty of accuracy potential once the adjustable HOP-up is set correctly. S&T recommends 0.25g BBs for this model.

The faux wood upper and lower handguards give this Rifle much of its character. They're polymer rather than timber, which helps keep weight under control, but the grain and colouring suit the Cold War styling nicely. Up front you also get the traditional adjustable post sight, dummy cleaning rod and gas-block arrangement. Move rearwards and there's the classic tangent rear sight, giving the broad field of view AK users will already know.

The receiver continues the lightweight theme with high-density polymer construction, while important external parts including the top cover, selector, trigger guard assembly and folding stock use steel. Alloy is used for the trunnion block and outer barrel. It's a sensible mix for a Sports Line Airsoft AEG: metal where strength matters, lighter material where several hundred grams can be saved.

On the left of the receiver is a Russian AK-style side mounting rail. This accepts suitable AK optic mounts and adapters, letting you add a 20mm rail if you fancy running a red dot or scope. The standard open sights remain perfectly usable if you're keeping the period look. Pull back the charging handle and the slider-type adjustable HOP-up is revealed. Move the slider rearwards for more HOP effect and forwards to reduce it. Simple, proven and easy to adjust at the skirmish site.

The controls stay faithful to the AK layout. Safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes are selected using the large lever on the right side, complete with Russian-style markings. The centrally positioned paddle magazine release can be reached from either side, although the overall shooter configuration is listed as right-handed. Magazines use the familiar AK “rock and lock” movement rather than pushing straight into the magwell like an M4.

At the rear is arguably the AKS-74N's defining feature: its steel skeleton stock. Press the release and the stock folds against the left side of the receiver, reducing overall length from approximately 94.3cm to 71cm. That's handy when moving through buildings, getting in and out of vehicles, or simply storing the BB Gun between games. Front and rear sling points are also provided for a suitable two-point AK-style sling.

Internally, S&T hasn't simply relied on the retro looks. The alloy Version 3 gearbox uses 18:1 steel gears running on 8mm slide-bearing bushings and includes a quick-change spring system. The gearbox is top wired, uses a standard motor and does not have an electronic trigger unit. Power comes from a 7.4V battery through a Mini Tamiya connector, with the battery compartment beneath the stamped steel top cover. Tested output is approximately 310 FPS, with a stated tolerance of ±10% using 0.20g BBs.

The supplied wheel-wound high-capacity AEG magazine holds approximately 300 rounds. Put everything together and this is a nicely balanced option for an airsofter after an AK with Soviet-era character but without full-metal weight. It works particularly well for Cold War, Soviet-Afghan, OPFOR and general AK-themed loadouts, while the standard V3 gearbox format leaves a familiar foundation if you decide to work on the internals later.
