Description.

The G&G Armament L85 AFV L22 Carbine 2.0 GT Advanced AEG is a rather different Rifle from the usual AR-pattern platforms filling most skirmish sites. Based on the compact L22 member of the SA80 family, this airsoft gun uses a bullpup layout to squeeze a useful barrel length into a package measuring only 585mm overall. If you fancy a British-style airsoft rifle but don't want a full-length L85 hanging off you all day, this little bruiser makes a lot of sense.

Externally, G&G hasn't simply dressed up a generic Airsoft AEG. The upper and lower receiver use stamped steel, backed up by metal components and olive green polymer furniture that give the L22 its unmistakable SA80 appearance. Up front sits the familiar birdcage flash hider on a 14mm CCW male thread, so compatible tracer units and suppressors can be fitted. The short handguard also provides 20mm Picatinny mounting space for accessories such as a vertical grip, torch or laser.

The bullpup controls are where this BB Gun really starts to feel different. The trigger and pistol grip sit ahead of the magazine well, while the fire selector lives towards the rear of the stock. It offers the traditional British markings, with "R" for semi-auto repetition and "A" for automatic fire. There's also a push-through safety near the grip, an A2-style protected magazine release and an enlarged charging handle. Small touches, admittedly, but together they make the replica feel much more convincing.

Pull that charging handle back and you gain access to the adjustable gear-style hop-up. G&G pairs this with its green cold-resistant hop rubber and an inner barrel listed at approximately 300mm. The supplied specifications recommend 0.20g to 0.25g 6mm BBs. Power is listed at an estimated 320 FPS in the supplied specification data, although actual output should always be checked with a chronograph before taking it onto a skirmish field.

Internally things get more interesting. Rather than a conventional M4 gearbox, the L22 uses G&G's dedicated L85 split gearbox arrangement with a PSG-1-length piston, 18:1 steel gears and 8mm brass bushings. Driving it is G&G's Orange IRFIT 25K high-speed motor. Add the electronic trigger unit and MOSFET and you've got a setup designed for a crisp trigger response and efficient cycling rather than the sluggish feel older bullpup AEGs sometimes suffer from.

The ETU also lets you replace full-auto with a programmable 3-round burst. Programming is handled through the trigger: with a battery installed and the selector on semi-auto, holding the trigger for 10 seconds switches the mode. Repeat the process to restore full-auto. Remove the magazine, wear eye protection and keep the muzzle pointed safely while programming.

Then there's the fun bit: electric blowback. The mock bolt carrier reciprocates as the AEG fires, adding movement, mechanical noise and a small amount of feedback through the gun. It won't behave like a gas blowback rifle, obviously, but compared with a conventional electric gun it gives the L22 considerably more personality. The bolt can also be locked rearward using the functional mock bolt catch when accessing the hop-up.

Magazine compatibility is refreshingly straightforward. A 450-round high-capacity magazine comes in the box, and the platform accepts M4/AR-15 AEG magazines, with steel STANAG-style magazines being a particularly fitting match. That saves you from building another collection of proprietary mags just because you've fancied something British for a change.

The rear end finishes things off with a serrated rubber butt plate, polymer cheek rest and sling points on both sides. Up top is a 19mm NATO/STANAG dovetail rather than a standard 20mm Picatinny receiver rail, so bear that in mind when choosing optics. A compatible adapter may be required for many modern 20mm sights. A carry handle is supplied in the package.

At roughly 3.1kg and 585mm long, the G&G L85 AFV L22 Carbine 2.0 has that satisfying weight you expect from a steel-heavy SA80 replica without becoming excessively long. It's particularly interesting for British loadouts, CQB-friendly SA80 builds or simply for an airsofter who has looked at the endless ranks of M4s and thought, "something else, please."
