Description.

The Ares/EMG Kel-Tec RDB17 Bullpup AEG in Black is one of those airsoft rifles that looks unusual because it genuinely does things differently. This officially licensed electric rifle recreates Kel-Tec's distinctive RDB layout, placing the action and magazine behind the trigger to give you a 430mm inner barrel while keeping overall length down to approximately 695mm. In practical airsoft terms, you get the barrel length of a much larger airsoft rifle without having quite so much gun waving around in front of you.

That compact layout makes the RDB17 an interesting alternative to a conventional airsoft assault rifle. Bullpups can work particularly well when moving between woodland and buildings because the bulk of the Airsoft AEG stays close to your shoulder. You can manoeuvre through a doorway without giving up a long inner barrel once you get outside again. At around 3kg, it still has enough weight to feel substantial without becoming a lump to carry all day.

The RDB name stands for Rifle Downward Ejection on the original firearm, and the real platform was designed around genuinely ambidextrous handling. EMG and ARES have carried that philosophy into the airsoft gun. The fire selector and magazine release controls are accessible from either side, making the RDB17 particularly friendly to left-handed players. It also makes shoulder transitions much easier for right-handed players when working around the opposite side of cover.

Externally, the main body uses high-density nylon fibre reinforced polymer, which is appropriate for the RDB design rather than simply being a cost-saving substitute for metal. Metal is used where it counts, including the outer barrel assembly and breech area. Running along the top is a full-length 20mm Picatinny rail, leaving plenty of room for a red dot, holographic-style sight or larger optic. Internally is where this BB Gun gets particularly interesting. Rather than giving the RDB17 a traditional mechanical bullpup trigger linkage, ARES uses its E.F.C.S. Electronic Fire Control System within a metal gearbox. The microswitch trigger provides a much cleaner electrical trigger input than the long mechanical linkage associated with many older bullpup AEG designs. On semi-auto especially, that helps the trigger feel considerably more immediate.

The E.F.C.S. setup incorporates a MOSFET, while the gearbox is specified with full steel gears, an 8mm bushing/bearing hybrid arrangement and a high-torque motor. There's also a quick spring change system, which makes spring access considerably less painful when maintenance or velocity adjustment is required. Less gearbox wrestling on the workbench. Always a welcome development.

ARES has wired the rifle to a Deans/T-Plug connector, with the battery housed inside the front handguard. Putting the battery at the front also helps make use of space that would otherwise be wasted on a bullpup. The handguard provides a relatively roomy battery compartment, although checking the physical dimensions of your chosen battery before buying is still sensible.

The RDB17 uses an adjustable rotary hop-up to control the backspin applied to the BB. The unit is accessed around the magazine well, and there's a particularly clever little detail here: the adjustment screwdriver stores inside the pistol grip. So when your BBs need a touch more or less hop halfway through a game, the tool hasn't mysteriously disappeared into whichever kit bag contains your lunch.

Magazine compatibility is another big plus. The RDB17 accepts standard M4/AR-15 STANAG-pattern AEG magazines, saving you from building another collection of proprietary mags for one unusual rifle. Better still, two mid-caps are supplied: a conventional 130-round magazine and a shorter 100-round magazine. The compact mag suits the RDB particularly well if you're trying to keep the whole setup neat and snag-free.

At the muzzle you'll find a 14mm CCW thread, allowing compatible airsoft tracer units and mock suppressors to be fitted. Combined with the long top rail and lower accessory rail, there's plenty of scope for personalising the RDB17 without spoiling the basic bullpup advantage. Keep the accessories sensible and this remains a very compact package.

What makes the EMG/ARES Kel-Tec RDB17 stand out isn't simply its futuristic appearance. It's the combination underneath: 695mm overall length, 430mm inner barrel, ambidextrous controls, M4 magazine compatibility, rotary hop and an electronic ARES gearbox.
