Description.
The Ares S&W 686 3.5” CO2 airsoft revolver (APR-002) is hands-down one of the most detailed and functional gas powered revolvers on the airsoft market. Whether you're a collector, revolver purist, or skirmisher looking for a high-performance backup piece, this is not some display-only relic. It performs, and it does it with serious style.
Let’s start with how it looks and feels. The 686’s full-metal body is made from high-quality zinc alloy with a stainless-style electroplated silver finish that gives off the kind of ‘80s cop drama shine that would make Dirty Harry jealous. Paired with genuine walnut grips—yes, *real* wood, not plastic fakery—it immediately stands out. Each grip has its own unique grain and texture, offering both comfort and style. And it hides the 12g CO2 capsule internally, keeping the aesthetics clean and authentic.
This airsoft revolver isn't just about looks though. Ares did something very few manufacturers have managed—they added a proper, adjustable Top-Down Centre (TDC) hop-up. That’s right. Most airsoft wheel guns don’t have a hop-up at all, and the ones that do are fixed. Here, you get a true hop-up that can be dialled in with an Allen key, giving you way more control over BB flight and range. The result? Surprisingly accurate shots, even with such a compact 3.5” barrel.
Speaking of that barrel, it hits a great middle ground—not as unwieldy as the 6” versions, but with more performance potential than a snub-nose. The balance is superb, and at roughly 910g in weight, it feels properly grounded in the hand. It’s not a toy. It’s a faithful homage to the real Smith & Wesson Model 686 L-Frame revolver, used by elite units like the French GIGN and even some US Navy SEAL units back in the day.
The action on the trigger is equally impressive. You’ve got a smooth double-action pull if you’re firing quickly, and a crisp single-action break for precision shots. That’s matched with a metal swing-out cylinder that clicks open and rotates just like the real thing. You can load the six included shells individually—or use the provided moon clip to slam in a full reload like a cowboy in a gunfight.
Each shell is built to mimic a .357 Magnum round, featuring a rubber gas-seal tip, copper-coloured neck, and aluminium casing. They don’t just work—they look fantastic doing it. With the moon clip, you’re not stuck fumbling around during a reload either. It’s snappy, efficient, and satisfying.
The front sight features a high-vis orange insert, and the rear sight is fully adjustable for windage and elevation—a rare bonus on revolvers. Combine that with the TDC hop-up, and you’ve actually got some tuning options to push out further than you'd expect from a six-shooter.
On the skirmish side, the loud “crack” when firing will turn heads. This revolver doesn't whisper—it's got presence. Dry firing it even without CO2 has that iconic revolver “clack-clack” rhythm that’s pure ASMR. Whether you're in a milsim game or just chilling at home, spinning the cylinder and pulling the hammer feels fantastic.
Is it practical as a primary? Probably not. But is it viable? Absolutely, especially with the adjustable hop and solid CO2 power behind it. This isn’t your typical “collector’s shelf only” piece. It’s built to be used and appreciated.
Other Great Features are,
- Electroplated finish resists wear and keeps its shine
- Realistic revolver sounds and mechanical action
- Functional moon clip for quick reloads
- Beautifully weighted and balanced at around 910g
