Description.

The WE R5C PCC Gas Blowback Rifle is one of those airsoft guns that looks familiar at first glance, then gets more interesting the closer you get. The controls and receiver layout have clear M4-family DNA, but WE has swapped the conventional rifle magazine arrangement for a slim 9mm-style PCC magazine and paired it with a short front end and retractable PDW stock. The result is a compact airsoft rifle that makes a lot of sense for CQB, buildings and other situations where a full-length platform can feel like you're trying to manoeuvre a broom handle around a doorway.

This isn't an Airsoft AEG dressed up to look like a gas gun, either. The R5C uses WE's gas blowback system, so every shot cycles the action and gives you that mechanical movement which makes a GBB rifle so different to an electric rifle. Pull the trigger and there's movement, noise and feedback through the gun rather than the relatively flat response of a conventional AEG. It isn't firearm recoil, obviously, but in airsoft terms there's enough going on to make shooting the R5C considerably more involving. Semi-auto is there for controlled shots and most normal skirmishing, while full-auto gives the little PCC a much rowdier personality when site rules allow it.

Starting at the front, WE has kept things short. The R5C uses a silencer-style metal outer barrel arrangement surrounded by a short aluminium Raptor-type handguard. That combination gives the gun a chunky, purposeful front end without adding unnecessary length. The handguard incorporates a 20mm Picatinny rail system, giving you useful mounting space for compatible airsoft accessories. On a compact CQB gun I'd personally resist the temptation to bolt the contents of the kit bag onto it; a small optic and whatever equipment you genuinely need will preserve the reason for choosing a short PCC in the first place.

WE also supplies removable metal flip-up front and rear sights. They're useful straight out of the box and, being removable, don't lock you into one sighting arrangement if you later fit a red dot. The short sight radius isn't really an issue for the distances this sort of airsoft gun is normally used at. In a tight indoor game, simple and uncluttered generally wins.

Move rearwards and you get a metal body receiver rather than a lightweight all-polymer shell. Together with the metal front assembly, this gives the R5C a substantial feel in the hands. The listed gun weight with magazine is approximately 2609g, so although the platform is physically compact, it doesn't feel toy-like. There's a nice distinction there. Small doesn't necessarily mean featherweight.

The pistol grip is polymer, which is perfectly sensible on this style of platform, while the rear uses a metal retractable PDW-style stock. Fully extended, the gun measures around 61cm according to the supplied specification. Collapse that stock and the R5C becomes a much tidier package for moving through doorways, pieing corners or simply carrying between games. It's one of the strongest practical features of the design. You get a usable shoulder stock when you want stability, without having a fixed stock hanging a mile out behind you when space gets tight.

Then there's the feature that really defines the R5C: that long, straight PCC magazine. It changes the silhouette completely compared with a standard M4-style airsoft assault rifle and makes the gun look more like a dedicated pistol-calibre carbine. The supplied magazine has a stated 30-round capacity, so this is very much a gas blowback experience rather than a high-cap mentality. Thirty shots means you'll be thinking about reloads and shot placement instead of pouring hundreds of BBs downrange. For many GBB players, that's half the appeal.

There is one particularly important magazine point worth knowing before you buy spares. We've physically tested the magazine fit because there are listings elsewhere claiming that the R5C accepts WE G-Series magazines. It does not. WE G-Series magazines do not fit this gun. The R5C requires the proprietary WE PCC magazine, so don't order a pile of G-Series mags expecting them to slot straight in. It's a small detail on paper, but a fairly expensive annoyance if you find out after ordering.

WE lists the R5C in roughly the 320-350 FPS region, while other supplied test information places it around 330-360 FPS with 0.20g BBs and Top Gas. That's a useful reminder that gas guns don't produce one fixed velocity in every situation. Temperature, gas pressure, BB weight, Hop-Up setting and even how quickly you fire can change the reading. On a warm summer day a gas blowback rifle can behave differently from the same gun on a cold winter morning, so chronograph it with the gas and BBs you intend to use and always work to your site's limits.

The R5C runs on Green Gas and is also listed as compatible with a separately available CO2 magazine. Green Gas is the straightforward option for most players and suits the normal GBB routine: fill the magazine, load the BBs and keep an eye on seals and lubrication as part of regular maintenance. Gas blowback systems ask for a little more attention than an Airsoft AEG, but that mechanical involvement is exactly why people enjoy them. You don't just feed it BBs and forget about it.

In use, the R5C sits in an interesting middle ground. It has the familiar handling and controls associated with an assault rifle-style platform, but the dimensions and stick magazine give it much more of a submachine gun or PCC flavour. For indoor skirmishing that's a cracking combination. You still get a shoulder-fired platform and proper stock, but the short overall package is much easier to keep tucked in while moving around cover.

It also makes an interesting choice for somebody looking for a BB Gun or airsoft rifle that isn't another conventional M4 clone. The R5C isn't different merely for the sake of looking unusual. Its short handguard, collapsing stock, 30-round magazine and gas blowback action all contribute to the way it handles. There's a coherent idea behind it: take familiar rifle ergonomics, shrink the package and give it the character of a gas-powered PCC.

As with most GBB platforms, I'd recommend treating the magazines as part of the gun rather than as an afterthought. Keep the seals in good order, use suitable gas, check them for leaks and avoid leaving the system neglected for months. A well-maintained gas magazine makes life much easier. Also remember that full-auto is thirsty. It's entertaining — very entertaining, actually — but hammering through 30-round magazines on automatic will consume gas considerably faster than measured semi-auto shooting.

Overall, the WE R5C PCC is a compact and rather characterful alternative to the standard M4-shaped crowd. The metal construction gives it reassuring weight, the retractable stock keeps it manageable in confined spaces, and the GBB system provides the movement and feedback that electric replicas simply deliver differently. Add the adjustable Hop-Up, removable sights and accessory rail space and you've got a practical CQB-oriented gas blowback rifle without losing the fun mechanical side that draws players towards GBBRs in the first place.
