Description.
The WE P38 Silver GBB airsoft pistol is a rather different proposition from the modern polymer-framed sidearms that fill most skirmish holsters. Based on the distinctive German P38 military handgun, this full-metal gas blowback replica combines old-school styling with a working semi-automatic GBB system. It is an airsoft gun with plenty of character, particularly in this silver version, and it makes an interesting choice for historical collections, WWII-inspired loadouts or anyone who simply fancies something other than another modern tactical pistol.
Starting at the business end, WE has fitted the P38 with a metal outer barrel backed by a 110mm inner barrel. The open-slide profile immediately gives this BB Gun its recognisable P38 appearance. It is quite unlike the squared-off slides seen on many contemporary airsoft handguns. Fixed metal front and rear sights sit above the action, giving you a simple, uncluttered sight picture without trying to turn a period-style sidearm into something it was never meant to be.
The main frame and slide are metal, which gives the WE P38 the cold, solid feel that suits this particular design. Polymer grip panels provide the necessary contrast and recreate the practical grip arrangement associated with the original handgun. The trigger, hammer, safety selector and slide release are also metal. Pick it up and there is none of that lightweight toy-like feeling sometimes found on cheaper replicas. There's a satisfying amount of substance here.
WE has used a gas blowback system, so every shot cycles the slide and resets the action for the next BB. That moving slide is a big part of what makes a GBB pistol enjoyable to use. There is a mechanical clack and a little kick through the hand rather than the lifeless response of a fixed-slide gas gun. It isn't trying to knock your wrist backwards, obviously, but the movement makes shooting the P38 more engaging.
Controls remain pleasingly traditional. This is a semi-automatic airsoft handgun rather than a selectable full-auto machine pistol, and that suits the P38 perfectly. The pistol also incorporates a functional safety and decocker. These features add to the mechanical character of the replica and will particularly appeal to airsofters who enjoy operating their GBB pistols rather than simply treating them as point-and-shoot backup guns.
Feeding comes from a removable green-gas magazine with a 14-round capacity, often described as 13+1 depending on how capacity is counted. That obviously isn't the enormous ammunition reserve of a modern extended magazine, but it fits the nature of the gun. A P38 is the sort of sidearm where aimed shots and sensible magazine management make more sense.
The pistol is compatible with WE P38 magazines, including the listed 5053 black P38 magazine and 5054 silver P38 magazine. Spare magazines are worth considering if this is going into regular skirmish use. Swapping a fresh gas magazine is far quicker than standing in the safe zone repeatedly loading the same one between games.
Green gas provides the power, with Nuprol 2.0 and Nuprol 3.0 listed as compatible options. As with any gas-powered airsoft pistol, actual performance can vary with gas pressure, ambient temperature, BB weight and how quickly you shoot. Gas guns tend to feel noticeably happier on warmer days than during a frosty British winter morning, so sensible gas selection matters.
Quoted muzzle velocity is approximately 300 FPS, giving the WE P38 the sort of output normally associated with a skirmishable GBB sidearm. The adjustable hop-up is an important feature here. Rather than relying solely on raw velocity, hop applies controlled backspin to the BB, helping it maintain a flatter trajectory. Spend a few minutes setting it for your chosen BB weight and the pistol becomes much more useful beyond across-the-room distances.
The supplied information places overall length at roughly 220mm. the manufacturer's specification also lists the weight at 950g. The metal construction gives it a substantial presence in the hand and reinforces the vintage military feel.
Ergonomically, the P38 is very much from another era. That's part of the appeal. You don't get interchangeable backstraps, an accessory-packed frame or the aggressively textured grip of a modern competition-style GBB pistol. Instead, the grip panels and traditional frame shape provide a straightforward hold that feels refreshingly uncomplicated. If your airsoft collection is dominated by modern service pistols, the difference is immediately noticeable.
The silver finish pushes the design even further away from the ordinary. A black P38 can disappear into a WWII loadout quite naturally; this version has considerably more visual presence. The metal slide, frame and outer barrel work particularly well with the darker polymer grip panels, giving the gun a two-tone appearance without altering the recognisable P38 silhouette.
From a skirmishing perspective, this is best viewed as a characterful gas blowback sidearm rather than a modern high-capacity race pistol. Fourteen rounds means you'll need to think about your shots, and the traditional sights aren't covered in fibre optics. Still, that's rather the point. If maximum magazine capacity and modern accessories are your priorities, there are other options. If you want a historical-style airsoft pistol that cycles with every trigger pull and feels satisfyingly mechanical, the WE P38 has much more personality.
Collectors should find plenty to appreciate too. The combination of a metal frame, metal slide, exposed hammer, traditional controls and working blowback gives the replica far more interaction than a static display piece. Rack the slide, work the controls and fire it, and the design comes alive. It's one of those airsoft guns where the mechanical layout is a large part of the attraction.
Maintenance is worth mentioning. Like any green-gas GBB pistol, the P38 benefits from sensible care. Keep the sliding contact surfaces appropriately lubricated, look after the magazine seals and avoid storing the magazine completely dry for long periods. A little routine attention goes a long way with gas guns. Nothing complicated, but don't chuck it damp into the bottom of a kit bag for six months and expect it to thank you.
Overall, the WE P38 Silver sits in an interesting spot. It has the familiar operation of a gas blowback airsoft handgun, but its shape, controls and military heritage make it feel completely different from today's tactical sidearms. For an airsofter putting together a period-inspired collection, looking for a distinctive GBB pistol, or simply wanting a metal airsoft gun with a bit of mechanical charm, there's plenty here to get stuck into.
