Description.

The WE TECH M9A1 Gen2 GBB airsoft pistol in Black takes one of the most recognisable military handgun shapes around and gives it a useful selection of modern airsoft upgrades. It's a full-metal Green Gas BB Gun with realistic blowback, an adjustable HOP-up and an integrated 20mm accessory rail. Better still, this Gen2 version isn't simply the old WE M9 wearing a slightly different badge. Changes to the internal gas system are intended to give smoother operation and better efficiency than earlier-generation WE M9 designs.

If you've handled an M9-style airsoft handgun before, the basic shape will immediately feel familiar. The open-top slide, exposed hammer, broad grip and long frame are all unmistakably M9. The M9A1 specification adds the squared tactical appearance around the front of the frame, most notably the accessory rail beneath the barrel. In black, it's a purposeful-looking sidearm. No unnecessary sci-fi angles or competition-style decoration. Just that old-school service pistol profile with enough modernisation to make sense on an airsoft field.

Construction is predominantly metal where you'd expect it. Both the slide and frame are metal, while the grip panels are polymer. With the magazine fitted, weight is approximately 900g. That's fairly substantial for a GBB pistol and gives the M9A1 the reassuring heft many players specifically want from this platform. Pick up a lightweight polymer-framed pistol immediately afterwards and the difference isn't subtle.

That weight also affects the shooting experience. Pull the trigger and the Green Gas system drives the metal slide backwards, cocking the hammer and producing the recoil movement that makes gas blowback pistols so much fun to use. The slide then returns forward and chambers the next BB. Once the magazine is empty, the functional slide catch holds the slide open, giving you the familiar visual and physical cue that it's time for another magazine.

The Gen2 part is important. Earlier WE M9 variants earned plenty of fans, but their gas efficiency and cool-down behaviour could become noticeable, particularly when shooting quickly or using them in colder conditions. The Gen2 design introduces revisions including an upgraded cylinder assembly and redesigned bucking, along with changes intended to produce smoother cycling and a crisper trigger response. It's still a full-metal gas pistol, so physics hasn't been cancelled – hammering through shots in cold weather will still cool the magazine – but the newer system is a worthwhile development of the older design.

Moving along the pistol from front to back, underneath the barrel you'll find the M9A1's integrated 20mm Picatinny rail. This is one of the practical differences between the M9A1 and older, plainer M9 configurations. It gives you a standard mounting point for a compatible pistol torch or laser. For indoor CQB, a compact weapon light makes particularly good sense. It also means you don't need one of those bulky clamp-on rail adapters that older M9 replicas sometimes required.

Inside, the approximately 110mm barrel is paired with an adjustable HOP-up system. If you're fairly new to gas pistols, HOP-up is simply the system that applies backspin to the BB. Adjusting it correctly helps counter the BB's natural drop and produces a flatter, more useful flight path. Rather than accepting however the pistol happens to shoot straight from the box, you can tune it around your chosen ammunition and playing conditions.

Quoted muzzle velocity for the WE M9A1 Gen2 sits at approximately 320-350 FPS using 0.20g BBs, with figures around 300-350 FPS also associated with the platform depending on gas and conditions. As always with a gas-powered airsoft gun, expect output to vary. Ambient temperature, magazine temperature, gas pressure and how quickly you're firing all have an effect. Chronograph the pistol using your site's required BB weight and procedure before playing rather than treating a quoted FPS number as carved in stone.

Now for the feature that separates this particular Gen2 version from a conventional M9 sidearm: selectable fire. Alongside normal semi-automatic operation, this model is specified with a full-automatic mode. Semi is what you'll use for normal sidearm duties, giving one shot for each trigger pull. Full-auto turns the M9 into something altogether more mischievous, cycling repeatedly while the trigger remains pressed. Fun? Absolutely. Economical with gas and BBs? Not especially.

Full-auto also makes temperature and gas management more important. A heavy metal slide requires a decent amount of gas to cycle, and repeated fast firing causes the magazine to cool. As it gets colder, pressure falls and performance can become less consistent. Short bursts make considerably more sense than trying to empty the whole magazine in one heroic squeeze, especially in typical British winter temperatures.

At the rear, the exposed hammer and safety/decocker arrangement contribute heavily to the M9's character. The controls are ambidextrous, so the safety levers can be operated from either side. The functional decocking arrangement allows the hammer to be lowered without firing the pistol. It's a more mechanically involved setup than the simple trigger safety found on many modern striker-style replicas, which is part of the attraction for players who like traditional service handguns.

It's worth knowing that M9-style safety and decocker controls can feel relatively stiff, particularly when new, and this has also been noted with WE examples. That's not necessarily something to attack with excessive force. Gas pistols are mechanical devices with small interacting parts, and sensible lubrication and normal use are preferable to trying to bully a stiff control into submission.

The grip is classic M9: broad, substantial and fitted with textured polymer panels. Players with medium or large hands often get on well with this shape because there is plenty to hold onto. Those accustomed to very slim modern pistol grips may notice the extra width, particularly because the magazine uses a double-stack style body. It's one of those designs where five minutes of handling tells you more than staring at photographs ever will.

Magazine capacity is approximately 25+1 rounds, with the supplied gas magazine generally described as holding around 25 to 26 BBs. The gas reservoir is contained within the magazine, as you'd expect from a conventional Green Gas GBB Pistol. Spare and extended magazine availability is one of the useful attractions of running a well-established WE platform, particularly if you plan to use the pistol regularly rather than keeping it purely as part of a collection.

Magazine compatibility is another useful point. The Gen2 is stated to be compatible with most WE and Tokyo Marui M9-series magazines. As with any cross-brand gas magazine compatibility, individual magazine generations and specifications can vary, so matching the correct M9-series magazine is sensible when buying spares rather than assuming every magazine carrying an M9 label will be identical.

Maintenance is straightforward GBB territory. Keep the pistol reasonably clean, look after the magazine seals, lubricate appropriate moving and sealing surfaces with suitable products, and don't leave dirt building up around the slide rails and working parts. Full-metal gas blowback guns contain a fair amount of metal moving against metal, so a little routine care goes a long way. Nothing dramatic. Just don't treat it like a garden spade and expect eternal happiness.

The WE TECH M9A1 Gen2 makes most sense for an airsofter who likes the traditional Beretta-style layout but wants more than a basic replica. You retain the exposed hammer, recognisable M9 controls, realistic field stripping and substantial metal construction, while gaining the M9A1 accessory rail, adjustable HOP-up and revised Gen2 internals. The selectable semi and full-auto operation then adds something considerably less traditional.

As a skirmish sidearm, it has the features that actually matter: useful magazine capacity, adjustable HOP, accessible controls and a rail for a light. As a replica, the metal construction, functioning slide catch, hammer and blowback action give it plenty of mechanical character. And as a BB pistol for someone who simply likes M9s? Well, it's an M9A1 with a full-metal build and a Gen2 gas system. Chances are you've already made your mind up.
