Description.

The SRC SR5-A2 SWAT Series is a CO2 powered blowback sub machine gun based around one of the most recognisable compact firearm layouts ever made. Rather than taking the more common electric route, SRC has given this airsoft gun a gas blowback system. Every pull of the trigger therefore comes with movement and feedback from the action, giving the SR5-A2 a much more mechanical character than the average electric SMG. If you're after an MP5-style BB Gun that actually feels busy in your hands when you fire it, this is an interesting bit of kit.

Although its compact dimensions put it firmly into SMG territory, the SR5-A2 is also commonly described as a blowback Rifle. Whatever label you put on it, the important part is how it handles. The short MP5-inspired format is naturally suited to CQB, buildings, barricades and other situations where a full-length airsoft rifle can start feeling like you're trying to manoeuvre a broom handle through a doorway. Shorter guns are simply easier to tuck into the shoulder and move around tight cover.

Starting at the front, SRC has kept the traditional fixed front sight arrangement. It contributes heavily to the familiar profile and provides a simple, uncluttered aiming reference. There's no need to turn this thing into a Christmas tree of accessories before taking it onto the field. The standard sighting arrangement gives you a straightforward starting point, particularly at the sort of distances where a compact SMG normally earns its keep.

Move back and you reach one of the more important parts of this particular model: the metal receiver. SRC combines metal and polymer components throughout the SR5-A2 rather than making the entire gun from lightweight plastic. The result is a more substantial replica, especially through the centre of the gun where you're holding and manipulating it most often. The metal receiver also suits the CO2 blowback system nicely; when the action cycles, you're getting that feedback through a solid-feeling body rather than a flimsy shell.

And that blowback action is really the reason you'd choose the SR5-A2 over a conventional Airsoft AEG. An electric gearbox is extremely practical, but it doesn't give you the same sensation as a gas system cycling during firing. With the SRC, the action provides noticeable movement and recoil feedback with each shot. It's not going to behave exactly like the firearm that inspired it – this is still an airsoft gun firing 6mm BBs – but there's considerably more going on than the whirr and pop of a standard electric setup.

CO2 also gives the rifle its own personality. Instead of plugging in and charging a battery, you're dealing with a gas-powered system. That appeals to airsofters who enjoy the more hands-on nature of gas and CO2 replicas. There's something satisfying about the sequence of loading, charging, firing and feeling the mechanism work. A little more involvement, certainly, but that's half the attraction.

It's worth understanding the other side of that equation too. CO2 performance can be influenced by temperature, firing speed and how much gas remains available. Fast strings of shots cool a gas system, and that can affect consistency. That's normal behaviour for gas-powered airsoft equipment rather than a fault unique to this SRC. If you're coming from an electric rifle, it's simply a different rhythm to get used to.

The SR5-A2 gives you selectable Safe, Semi-Auto and Full-Auto modes. Semi-auto is likely to see plenty of use in CQB environments where site rules often restrict automatic fire, while full-auto gives you the proper SMG experience where regulations permit it. Flicking between the modes is simple in principle, and the familiar layout means anyone with previous experience of this style of platform should feel at home fairly quickly.

Full-auto combined with blowback is where this model becomes particularly entertaining. The cycling action gives each burst much more physical character than you'd get from a non-blowback setup. You can actually feel the gun working. It makes short controlled bursts rather satisfying, although you'll naturally consume CO2 more quickly when you're leaning heavily on automatic fire. Physics always sends the bill eventually.

SRC has also equipped the SR5-A2 with an adjustable hop-up. If you're fairly new to airsoft, hop-up controls the backspin applied to the BB as it leaves the barrel. Increasing or decreasing that backspin changes the BB's flight path, allowing you to tune the gun for the ammunition you're using. Too little hop and your shots drop early. Too much and they'll climb upwards. Set correctly, the BB should travel on a much flatter, more useful trajectory.

Don't be tempted to constantly fiddle with the hop once it's working properly. Start with small adjustments, fire several test shots and watch the BB flight rather than judging the result from a single round. Once you've found a setting that works with your chosen BB weight, you're generally better off leaving it there. A properly adjusted hop contributes far more to useful airsoft accuracy than endlessly chasing tiny changes.

At the rear, this A2-style SR5 uses a fixed stock rather than a collapsible arrangement. That changes the character of the gun compared with the sliding-stock versions of this platform. You lose the ability to shorten the stock for storage or extremely confined spaces, but gain a consistent shoulder position every time you bring the gun up. For players who prefer a solid stock rather than something sliding back and forth, that's no bad thing.

The fixed stock also balances the compact front end visually and physically. Bring the SR5-A2 into the shoulder and you have three useful points of contact: your firing hand, support hand and shoulder. That stable stance makes it easier to control the movement from the blowback system and keep the sights where you want them during follow-up shots.

As a CQB airsoft SMG, the layout makes plenty of sense. Its compact front end is easier to move through doorways, around corners and between pieces of cover than a long assault rifle. That's where the old MP5-style format continues to shine. Designs come and go, rails get longer, handguards become increasingly elaborate, yet this basic shape remains remarkably comfortable in confined spaces.

The tactical black finish keeps the SR5-A2 understated. There aren't bright competition parts or oversized decorative controls fighting for attention. Instead, you get that familiar SWAT-style appearance: compact, dark and functional. For an airsofter building a police, tactical response or classic special-forces inspired loadout, it fits the part without needing much work.

It's also worth considering who this model is best suited to. If your priority is maximum convenience, enormous magazine capacity and the ability to recharge overnight, an Airsoft AEG will probably remain the simpler option. The SRC SR5-A2 takes a different approach. Its appeal comes from the CO2 operation, blowback movement and the more involved shooting experience. You choose this because you want to feel the action working, not because you're trying to remove every mechanical interaction from the game.

Maintenance matters for the same reason. Gas blowback replicas contain moving components and seals that need more attention than the average electric gun. Keep the action clean, check seals periodically and use lubricants that are suitable for airsoft gas systems where required. Dirt mixed with excessive lubricant quickly turns into grime, so more isn't necessarily better. A little care in the right places goes a long way.

Before skirmishing, it's also sensible to chronograph the SR5-A2 using the BB weight required by your site. CO2 systems can vary according to environmental conditions, and site energy limits always take priority. The supplied information for this model doesn't provide a confirmed FPS figure, so we're not going to invent one. Chrono it, check it against your site's limits and you'll know exactly where your particular rifle stands.

Overall, the SRC SR5-A2 SWAT Series is aimed at the airsofter who likes the compact practicality of an MP5-style platform but wants something more involving than a conventional electric SMG. The metal receiver, fixed stock, adjustable hop-up, selectable firing modes and powerful blowback action give it plenty of character. It's old-school SMG styling with a gas-powered heartbeat underneath. Rather fun, that.
