Description

A red dot sight is a common term for a type of non-magnifying reflector (or reflex) sight for firearms and other aiming devices that provides the user with a point of aim in the form of an illuminated red dot. A common design employs a red light-emitting diode (LED) at the focal point of collimating optics to form a dot-style lighted reticle that remains aligned with the weapon to which the sight is mounted, regardless of eye location (almost parallax free). They are regarded as quick-acquisition and simple-to-use gun sights for civilian target shooting, hunting, and police and military use. They are used on cameras and telescopes in addition to firearms. They are used on cameras to picture flying aeroplanes, birds in flight, and other distant, rapidly moving things. Because telescopes have a limited field of view, they are sometimes equipped with a secondary "finder scope" such as a red dot sight.

Red dot sights bring the target and the reticle into close proximity, providing for a single point of focus. This makes them quick-acquisition and simple-to-use sights, letting the user to focus on the field of view in front of them. They are common in high-speed shooting sports like IPSC. They have also been adopted by military and police services. For similar reasons, red dot sights are popular among paintball and airsoft players.

The shooter does not need to worry about parallax or eye relief because there is no magnification. Because of the lengthy eye relief, red dot sights are excellent for rifles with severe recoil, which would otherwise drive a traditional short eye relief telescopic sight into the shooter's eye. Because dot sights can be mounted at any distance from the shooter's eye without affecting focus, military rifle mounts typically place the sight in any mechanically-convenient mounting position, such as the M16 rifle's carrying handle or on a rail system (typically a Picatinny rail) on top of the rifle. This allows for the use of night vision equipment in conjunction with the red dot sight.
