Description.
Modern sniper rifles certainly have their place in airsoft. Adjustable stocks, M-LOK handguards, oversized optics and tactical accessories dominate most sniper platforms seen on skirmish fields today. The S&T Type 38 takes a completely different route. This is a rifle steeped in history, built around one of the most recognisable military bolt-action designs of the early twentieth century.
For players seeking something genuinely different from the usual tactical options, this airsoft sniper rifle offers a refreshing blend of historical authenticity, solid performance, and impressive craftsmanship. It captures the distinctive appearance of the Japanese Type 38 while incorporating modern internals that make it a practical and capable skirmish platform.
The first thing that stands out is the rifle's impressive physical presence. Measuring approximately 1275mm to 1290mm in length depending on measurement method, the Type 38 is a long rifle by modern standards. Yet despite its size, it balances surprisingly well thanks to the combination of a real wood stock and carefully proportioned metal components.
The one-piece wooden stock is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this replica. Unlike imitation wood finishes often found on budget replicas, the genuine timber stock delivers the warmth, texture, and natural character that collectors and history enthusiasts appreciate. Every stock has its own grain pattern and subtle variations, making each rifle feel unique.
As the rifle sees regular use, the wood develops its own personality through natural wear and handling marks. Small imperfections become part of the story rather than flaws. Much like the original military rifles that inspired it, the stock only becomes more interesting with age.
Complementing the timber furniture is a robust collection of metal components. The receiver, outer barrel, bolt assembly, and associated hardware are all metal, contributing to both durability and realism. Pick the rifle up and it immediately feels substantial without becoming overly cumbersome.
At approximately 3.5kg in weight, the Type 38 strikes a nice balance between authenticity and practicality. It feels solid enough to replicate the character of the original firearm while remaining comfortable enough for extended woodland games and historical events.
The bolt-action system delivers exactly the sort of experience enthusiasts hope for from a rifle of this style. Every shot requires a manual cycle of the bolt, creating a deliberate and rewarding shooting rhythm. The action itself feels reassuringly mechanical, adding another layer of realism to the overall experience.
One particularly charming detail is the inclusion of the metal dust cover. As the bolt is worked, the dust cover produces a distinctive metallic sound that immediately enhances immersion. It's a small feature, but one that many collectors and military history fans genuinely appreciate.
Unlike many historical replicas that prioritise appearance over functionality, the S&T Type 38 incorporates a proven internal system based largely around VSR-10 architecture. This is excellent news for both skirmish players and upgrade enthusiasts.
The VSR-style design provides access to one of the largest aftermarket ecosystems in airsoft. Springs, pistons, hop-up units, barrels, trigger components, and performance upgrades are widely available. Whether you plan to leave the rifle stock or gradually build a higher-performance setup, there is a clear upgrade path available.
Out of the box, the rifle typically produces around 380 FPS with 0.20g BBs, generating approximately 1.34 joules of muzzle energy. This places it comfortably within the limits of many UK skirmish sites while still offering excellent range potential for woodland engagements.
The adjustable hop-up system allows players to fine-tune BB trajectory for different ammunition weights. While 0.25g BBs perform well, many users choose to step up to 0.28g or 0.30g ammunition to maximise consistency and stability at longer distances.
Adjustment is straightforward thanks to the accessible hop-up control positioned along the side of the barrel assembly. Once dialled in, the rifle delivers consistent flight paths and impressive accuracy for a platform in this category.
Another welcome feature is the 6.03mm inner barrel. This tight bore design helps improve air efficiency and shot consistency while complementing the rifle's naturally accurate spring-powered system. Combined with quality BBs and proper hop-up adjustment, the rifle is capable of producing very respectable groupings.
Historically accurate details are found throughout the rifle. The distinctive bolt handle shape, traditional stock profile, and military-style fittings all contribute to an authentic appearance. Depending on production batch, many examples also feature correct receiver markings that further enhance realism.
The sniper variant includes a side-mounted scope rail, allowing users to install period-correct optics while maintaining historical accuracy. This setup closely mirrors the arrangements used on original sniper-configured Type 38 rifles.
For players who prefer a more traditional shooting experience, the rifle's iron sights are surprisingly effective. The adjustable ladder-style rear sight offers excellent visibility and can be fine-tuned for elevation. Once familiar with the sight picture, many shooters find the iron sights remarkably capable.
This versatility means the rifle works equally well as a scoped sniper platform or as a classic bolt-action rifle using traditional iron sights. Few historical replicas provide that level of flexibility straight from the box.
One of the areas where the Type 38 really shines is during historical and military simulation events. Modern tactical rifles often look out of place in period-themed scenarios. The Type 38, on the other hand, fits naturally into World War II and Pacific Theatre loadouts, making it a fantastic choice for reenactors and dedicated milsim players.
Collectors will also appreciate the rifle's display value. The combination of real wood, metal construction, long barrel profile, and authentic military styling creates a piece that looks superb both on the field and mounted in a collection.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the S&T Type 38 is how successfully it bridges two worlds. It offers the appearance and charm of a genuine historical rifle while quietly benefiting from modern airsoft engineering underneath. You get the best of both worlds: period authenticity and practical performance.
Whether you're building a historically accurate Japanese loadout, looking for a unique spring-powered sniper platform, or simply want an airsoft gun that stands apart from modern tactical designs, the S&T Type 38 Airsoft Sniper Rifle delivers an experience packed with character. It's elegant, distinctive, and genuinely rewarding to shoot.
