Description.
The Rossi Neptune SAS 10.5 is a full metal airsoft assault rifle inspired by the compact L119A2 family associated with UK Special Forces. Rather than stopping at the external appearance, Rossi has given this Airsoft AEG a surprisingly serious internal specification. You get a programmable electronic trigger and MOSFET, 16:1 CNC gears, a 6.02mm precision barrel and a Maple Leaf hop combination straight from the box. For an airsofter who wants an L119A2-style build without immediately opening the gearbox and replacing half of it, there's quite a bit to get your teeth into here.
The inspiration behind this electric rifle comes from the L119A2-style carbines associated with modern British special forces. Its compact 10.5 inch front end gives the Neptune the purposeful proportions that make this type of carbine so popular for UKSF-inspired airsoft loadouts. It's short enough to remain manageable around buildings and barricades, yet it still shoulders and handles like a conventional AR-pattern airsoft rifle rather than an ultra-compact submachine gun.
Starting at the front, Rossi fits a CNC-machined lightweight 10.5 inch handguard. This isn't simply a decorative plastic shell around the barrel. The metal construction gives the front end a sturdy feel, and the CNC machining keeps the appearance suitably clean and modern. Rossi has paid attention to how the receiver and handguard fit together as well, which matters on an AEG because unwanted movement at the front can make an otherwise decent rifle feel cheap very quickly.
Inside that front end sits a one-piece outer barrel and a 300mm inner barrel with a tight 6.02mm bore. A 6.02mm barrel is intended to provide a consistent path for the BB while maintaining a relatively tight air seal around it. Barrel diameter alone doesn't magically make an airsoft gun accurate – hop quality, ammunition and consistency matter just as much – but Rossi hasn't ignored those areas either.
The hop setup is one of the more interesting parts of the Neptune specification. Rossi pairs a Maple Leaf 60° Super Macaron bucking with a Maple Leaf Omega Nub. Anyone who has spent time upgrading AEG hop units will recognise those names. The bucking provides the contact surface that applies backspin to the BB, while the Omega Nub helps distribute pressure across that contact patch. In plain English, it's a combination intended to give controlled, consistent hop rather than simply squeezing the BB from one tiny point.
That matters when you're setting the rifle up for the BB weight you actually use. Dial the hop in correctly and the backspin helps keep the BB flying flatter for longer. Too little and shots drop early. Too much and they start climbing. There's still some setup involved – there always is – but having recognised aftermarket-style hop components fitted from the outset gives this Rossi a useful starting point.
Move back to the receiver and the Neptune continues the full metal theme. Both the receiver and stock tube are metal, helping the rifle feel solid through the centre where you're actually supporting and manipulating it. At the rear is a collapsible nylon-fibre stock, giving you adjustment for different arm lengths, shooting positions and load-bearing kit.
Overall length runs from approximately 740mm with the stock closed to 810mm when extended. That's a handy size for a 10.5 inch carbine. Collapse the stock when you're moving through tighter areas and pull it out when you want a more comfortable shoulder position. At around 2500g, the rifle has enough weight to feel substantial without becoming a lump that you regret carrying halfway through a game day.
Rossi has also fitted folding metal sights. They're useful as a straightforward aiming solution out of the box and can be folded when you're using an optic. The overall setup lends itself nicely to the sort of compact red-dot configuration commonly seen on modern carbine builds, though what you bolt onto it is entirely down to how elaborate you want your UKSF-inspired setup to become.
There are markings on both sides of the replica. The Neptune-series trident logo appears alongside the "Op. Neptune Spear" text, while Rossi markings appear elsewhere on the gun. Each model is also stated to carry its own unique serial number. These aren't being presented as licensed Colt Canada markings, but they do give the rifle more visual character than a completely blank receiver.
The real party trick is inside. Rossi equips this Neptune with its V2 programmable electronic trigger system and MOSFET. Instead of relying entirely on old-fashioned mechanical trigger contacts, the electronic system controls the firing cycle and provides several programmable modes. Standard semi and automatic fire are available, but you can also configure binary operation and 2, 3, 4 or 5 round burst modes.
Binary is the unusual one if you've never used a programmable Airsoft AEG before. In this mode, the trigger system can produce a firing action on the pull and another on the release, subject of course to how the system is configured. It's a specialist feature rather than something every player will use. More importantly, always make sure the selected fire mode complies with the rules at your airsoft site. A programmable trigger doesn't override the marshal's briefing. Nice try, though.
The MOSFET also provides active braking. Active braking electronically helps stop the motor after the firing cycle rather than allowing the drivetrain to coast as freely. In practical terms, that can help provide more controlled cycling and makes sense alongside an electronic trigger system designed around responsive operation.
Rossi has matched the electronics with a 16:1 CNC gear set. Compared with a conventional 18:1-style ratio commonly encountered in standard V2 gearboxes, 16:1 gearing is aimed towards a somewhat faster drivetrain while retaining sensible mechanical leverage. It's a useful middle ground for an AEG designed to provide responsive semi-auto performance without going down the rabbit hole of an extreme high-speed gearbox build.
The piston uses steel teeth, another welcome detail in a rifle with electronic fire control and burst options. Rossi also lists 8mm bearing-equipped gearbox support, a piston head with bearing and a QD metal spring guide with its own bearing. These aren't particularly glamorous features when the rifle is sitting on a website, but they're exactly the sort of specification an experienced airsofter looks for before deciding whether an AEG has decent bones.
The aluminium CNC nozzle includes an O-ring, which is there to assist with the air seal between the nozzle and the rest of the compression system. Consistent compression matters because inconsistent air delivery usually means inconsistent muzzle velocity, and inconsistent velocity isn't doing your shot-to-shot accuracy any favours. It's another example of Rossi putting useful components inside rather than spending the entire budget on the exterior.
There's also an 8mm quick-change spring gearbox system. A quick-change arrangement makes accessing the main spring considerably less painful than on older V2 designs where changing a spring could mean stripping most of the gearbox down. That's useful for maintenance, tuning or bringing the rifle into an appropriate power range, although any internal work should still be carried out by someone who understands AEG gearboxes.
The supplied information puts the Neptune at approximately 330 FPS out of the box. As always, treat any quoted FPS as a guide rather than a promise that every rifle will produce exactly the same number. Spring condition, air seal, BB weight and chronograph setup can all affect readings. Chronograph your own airsoft gun using the ammunition specified by your site before playing.
Rossi includes two 120 round polymer mid-cap magazines. That's a particularly sensible choice for this style of airsoft rifle. Mid-caps don't need winding and don't produce the bottle-of-Tic-Tacs rattle associated with a half-empty high-cap. With two supplied, you've also got 240 BBs of magazine capacity available without needing to buy a second mag before your first game.
The AR-style layout means the Neptune will feel familiar to anyone who has previously used an M4-pattern BB Gun or Airsoft AEG. The adjustable stock, conventional magazine position and compact front end don't require much adaptation. That makes it approachable for a newer player while the programmable trigger, quick-change spring system and upgraded hop components give experienced airsofters something more interesting to work with.
At 10.5 inches, the front end is particularly well suited to mixed environments. Indoors, you're not dragging a huge barrel around every doorway. Outdoors, the 300mm inner barrel and Maple Leaf hop setup still provide a sensible basis for normal rifle engagements. Don't get too hung up on barrel length when it comes to airsoft accuracy, either. A properly set hop and good-quality BBs generally matter far more than adding another six inches of barrel just because it looks impressive.
The combination of black metalwork, compact handguard and collapsible stock also makes the Neptune a convincing base for a modern British special forces-inspired build. You can keep it simple or gradually add the accessories that suit your loadout. Either way, the underlying rifle already has the short, purposeful L119A2-style silhouette.
What makes the Rossi Neptune SAS 10.5 stand out is the balance between externals and internals. Plenty of AEGs look good from the outside and reveal a very ordinary gearbox once you dig deeper. Here, the 16:1 CNC gears, steel-tooth piston, bearing spring guide, aluminium O-ring nozzle, 6.02mm barrel, Maple Leaf bucking and programmable trigger give the technical side some substance.
That doesn't mean there's nothing left to modify. This is airsoft; someone will always find something to change before the first bag of BBs is empty. But you aren't starting with a bare-bones specification. Straight from the box, the Neptune already includes several components players commonly look at when improving trigger response, hop performance and gearbox durability.
For someone putting together an L119A2-inspired airsoft loadout, this Rossi is a particularly interesting proposition. You get the compact 10.5 inch format and full metal construction on the outside, while the programmable V2 trigger and better-than-basic gearbox specification sit underneath. It's usable without modification but still leaves room for the serial tinkerer to make it their own later.
Overall, the Rossi L119A2 Style Neptune SAS 10.5 is much more than a standard M4 wearing a different handguard. The combination of CNC metal externals, compact proportions, electronic fire control, quick-change gearbox and Maple Leaf hop components gives it a genuinely useful specification. At around 330 FPS and supplied with two mid-cap magazines, it's set up as a practical skirmish rifle from day one. Short, solid and rather well equipped inside. That's a good recipe.
