Old-school lever action meets the modern AR platform – and the result is one seriously unusual airsoft rifle.

Description.

The G&G LEVAR Modern Lever Action 15" in Macaron Blue is one of those airsoft guns that makes you look twice. At first glance, the upper half resembles a modern tactical Rifle, complete with an AR-style receiver, long M-LOK handguard and Picatinny optics rail. Then your eyes reach the oversized lever underneath. Yep. G&G really did combine an AR-style platform with a manually cycled lever action, and somehow the two completely different design ideas work together.

This isn't an electric rifle with a decorative lever fitted underneath, either. The LEVAR is a genuinely gas-powered, manually operated airsoft gun. After firing, you work the lever through its full stroke to operate the action and prepare the rifle for the next BB. That makes shooting it deliberately different from running an Airsoft AEG or conventional gas blowback rifle. You aren't simply hammering the trigger as quickly as your finger allows. There's a rhythm to it: aim, fire, run the lever, get back onto the target. Simple on paper. Surprisingly addictive once you've done it a few times.

One important point is worth clearing up because the LEVAR sometimes gets incorrectly described as a shell-ejecting rifle. It isn't. BBs feed from a detachable M4-style AEG magazine rather than individual mock cartridges, so there are no brass shells flying across the skirmish site every time you cycle the action. G&G supplies a compact 32-round low-cap magazine, while compatibility with regular M4 / AR-15 AEG magazines makes the platform considerably more practical than a six-shot shell-fed lever gun.

Starting at the muzzle, the 15-inch version has the longer front end of the LEVAR family. The aluminium handguard uses M-LOK attachment slots, giving you plenty of freedom when setting the rifle up. A hand stop, grip, torch or other compatible accessory can be positioned where it actually suits your hands instead of being dictated by fixed rails. Running along the top is a Picatinny rail for mounting an optic. A compact red dot suits the modern lever-gun character particularly well, although there's enough rail space to experiment with different sight arrangements.

Move rearwards and things become even more interesting. The LEVAR's upper is heavily influenced by G&G's M4/AR platform, which isn't merely a styling exercise. The rifle is designed around compatibility with G&G M4 / AR-15 AEG upper receivers, opening up some genuinely unusual custom-build possibilities. It's the sort of modular approach G&G does rather well. Leave it standard and it already looks distinctive; start swapping compatible components and you can head pretty far down the rabbit hole.

The magazine arrangement is another clever choice. Instead of forcing LEVAR owners into an obscure proprietary feeding system, G&G designed it around ordinary M4 AEG magazines. The supplied short 32-round magazine keeps the profile tidy and fits the rifle's slightly futuristic western appearance nicely. Larger compatible magazines can also be used when practicality matters more than keeping the lines clean. An ambidextrous magazine release helps too, particularly for left-handed players.

Underneath the receiver sits the feature that gives the LEVAR its personality: that big lever loop. Cycling it operates the loading mechanism and resets the action for your next shot. The movement is deliberately substantial rather than being a tiny token flick of the wrist, so you actually feel involved in running the gun. Compared with an assault rifle-style AEG, it's slower. Of course it is. That's rather the point. You trade sheer rate of fire for a much more mechanical shooting experience.

It's also worth noting that this is not a conventional GBB rifle in the usual sense. Although powered by gas, the LEVAR does not rely on a normal semi-automatic gas blowback cycle to reload itself after every shot. Your arm supplies the cycling energy through the lever. That helps make the gas system comparatively straightforward and efficient while giving the gun its distinctive manual operation. The internal gas reservoir is filled separately from the BB magazine, so changing magazines doesn't mean throwing away the gas charge that's still in the rifle.

The hop-up follows familiar airsoft principles, allowing backspin to be adjusted to suit your chosen BB weight and the way the rifle is shooting. Anyone coming from an Airsoft AEG should therefore find the basic setup quite familiar, even though the action sitting underneath it is anything but conventional. As always with a gas rifle, muzzle energy can vary with gas pressure, ambient temperature and other conditions, so chronograph the LEVAR using the gas and BB weight you intend to run before taking it onto a skirmish field.

At a listed weight of approximately 3230g, the LEVAR 15" has some proper substance to it. This isn't a featherweight polymer carbine. The longer handguard and substantial metal construction give it the solid feel you'd expect from a premium G&G platform, though you'll certainly know you've been carrying it after a full day. A sling is worth considering if you're planning to skirmish with it rather than simply use it for target shooting.

The Macaron Blue dual-tone finish takes an already unconventional BB Gun and pushes it even further away from the ordinary black-rifle crowd. It won't be everybody's cup of tea, admittedly, but that's almost beside the point with the LEVAR. This isn't the gun you buy because you want another anonymous M4-shaped primary. It's for the airsofter who likes mechanical operation, unusual platforms and something that attracts a few curious looks when it comes out of the gun bag.

For actual skirmishing, you do need to understand what you're getting. Someone carrying a fast-trigger Airsoft AEG can obviously put BBs downrange faster than a LEVAR user who has to manually cycle between shots. If winning every close-range exchange through sheer volume is your priority, there are easier tools for the job. Give the LEVAR some space, play deliberately and make your shots count, however, and it becomes much more rewarding. There's a little skill involved in keeping the rifle shouldered while smoothly working the action. Get the rhythm right and it's enormously satisfying.

It's also a strong choice for themed loadouts that don't quite fit the usual military mould. Modern cowboy? Post-apocalyptic scout? Tactical western setup? The LEVAR can wander into all of those without looking out of place. Even as a straightforward woodland airsoft rifle, though, it has enough modern hardware to remain practical rather than becoming a novelty piece that spends its life hanging on a wall.

G&G Armament has been making airsoft equipment for decades, and the LEVAR shows the company's willingness to try something genuinely different rather than simply releasing another variation of the same AR. It borrows familiar M4 magazine and upper-receiver concepts, combines them with gas power and then drops a lever action underneath. Sounds slightly mad when written down. In your hands, it makes considerably more sense.
