Big Bird Looks, Full Metal Weight and CO2 Power – This Hwasan Is No Ordinary Sidearm!

Description.

The Hwasan Large M&P CO2 Non-Blowback Airsoft Pistol in Black is a rather different beast from your everyday skirmish sidearm. Inspired by the oversized Big Bird pistol design, this full metal airsoft pistol brings together imposing looks, substantial weight and a straightforward CO2-powered firing system. It's the sort of airsoft gun that immediately catches your eye, particularly if you're into unusual military-style handguns rather than another standard compact sidearm.

What makes the Hwasan Large M&P interesting is its combination of heavyweight construction and non-blowback operation. Plenty of gas-powered pistols concentrate on moving slides and realistic recoil, but this one takes a different approach. The slide stays stationary during firing, leaving the CO2 system to concentrate on propelling the BB rather than cycling the action. Less movement, fewer complications and a rather practical arrangement for anyone who prefers simplicity over mechanical theatrics.

A Full Metal Build That Feels the Part

Starting with the exterior, the Hwasan Large M&P features full metal construction, giving it a substantial presence compared with lightweight polymer airsoft handguns. Pick up a metal-bodied pistol and you immediately notice the difference. There's a reassuring solidity to the construction, and the black finish complements the large, distinctive profile nicely.

The Big Bird-inspired styling is a major part of its appeal. This isn't trying to disappear into a tiny holster or pretend it's a pocket-sized backup. It's a large-format BB Gun with a chunky appearance that suits collectors, recreational shooters and airsofters who appreciate something a little outside the usual catalogue.

That metal construction also gives the pistol a more convincing feel during handling. Of course, metal doesn't make an airsoft gun indestructible, and sensible maintenance still matters. However, the solid exterior is certainly one of the standout characteristics of this Hwasan model.

CO2 Power Without the Blowback

Underneath that black metal exterior sits a CO2-powered firing system. CO2 is a popular choice for airsoft pistols because it provides strong gas pressure and can deliver consistent shooting performance under suitable conditions.

The important detail here is the non-blowback mechanism. Unlike a GBB pistol, where gas is used to cycle the slide after each shot, the Hwasan keeps its slide fixed during firing. This generally makes non-blowback pistols more economical with gas, as less energy is spent moving mechanical parts backwards and forwards.

There's another benefit. With no blowback cycle to manage, the internal mechanism is comparatively straightforward. That means fewer moving components associated with the firing action and potentially less routine maintenance than a traditional gas blowback design. You won't get the satisfying slide kick of a blowback handgun, but that's the trade-off. And for some players, it's a worthwhile one.

The Hwasan operates in safe and single-shot modes, so each trigger pull fires one BB when the pistol is ready to shoot. No full-auto surprises here. Just straightforward semi-automatic-style operation.

301–350 FPS Performance and Fixed Hop-Up

The Hwasan Large M&P has a stated muzzle velocity range of 301–350 FPS. That's a useful level of performance for a CO2 airsoft handgun, although actual readings can vary depending on temperature, ammunition weight and shooting conditions.

Before taking it onto a UK airsoft site, we'd recommend checking the pistol with a chronograph using the ammunition specified by the site. Different venues have their own power limits, and a CO2 pistol sitting towards the upper end of this range may not meet every site's requirements.

The pistol also uses a fixed hop-up. Hop-up applies backspin to the BB, helping it maintain a flatter flight path over distance. On this model, the setting is fixed rather than adjustable, which removes the need to fiddle around with hop-up settings between games.

The downside? You can't fine-tune the backspin to suit different BB weights as you would with an adjustable system. Using good-quality ammunition and testing how the pistol shoots is therefore worthwhile. A few minutes on the target range will tell you far more than simply looking at an FPS figure.

Who Is the Hwasan Large M&P For?

This Hwasan makes an interesting choice for airsofters who want a distinctive CO2 sidearm, particularly those who favour solid metal construction and uncomplicated operation. Its large dimensions and Big Bird styling also give it plenty of appeal as a display piece or an addition to an unusual airsoft handgun collection.

For skirmishing, consider its size before choosing your holster and loadout. A large pistol can be less convenient to carry than a compact backup, especially when you're crawling through woodland or squeezing around tight CQB corners. Still, if you like your airsoft kit with a bit of character, this one certainly has it.

As with any CO2-powered airsoft pistol, use the correct gas cartridges, suitable airsoft BBs and appropriate eye protection. Keep the seals clean, follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance and avoid leaving a pierced CO2 cartridge installed for extended storage.
