Description.
The Double Bell 789+ JW3 Baba Yaga in Black is a green gas airsoft pistol based around the familiar Hi-Capa-style platform, with competition-inspired controls and the distinctive JW3 Baba Yaga appearance. This version comes as the deluxe collector package, so there's rather more going on here than simply opening a cardboard box and finding another airsoft gun inside. The pistol is presented in a collector case alongside JW themed pieces including coins, a pencil and Continental card.
Underneath the collector appeal is a fully functional GBB Pistol that can be used as a skirmish sidearm. Green gas powers the firing system and cycles the metal slide every time you pull the trigger. Once the 28 round magazine is empty, the slide locks to the rear. It's a familiar setup for experienced gas-pistol players and gives the 789+ a much more mechanical, involving feel than a fixed-slide BB Gun.
The predominantly metal construction gives the pistol plenty of presence in the hand. Double Bell uses metal for the main construction and controls, while the grip is polymer. That's a sensible arrangement for a Hi-Capa-style airsoft handgun. You get the weight and cold-to-the-touch feel of the metal components without making the grip unnecessarily cumbersome.
Moving around the pistol, one of the more useful features is the extended magazine release. It protrudes further than a basic service-pistol release, so your thumb can find it more easily when you need to ditch an empty magazine. It sounds like a small detail until you're trying to reload behind cover with BBs bouncing off the wall beside you. Then it suddenly makes quite a lot of sense.
At the base of the grip is a flared magwell. This widens the entrance to the magazine well and helps guide a fresh magazine into place during a reload. Think of it as a small funnel for your mag. You still need to get the magazine roughly where it belongs, naturally, but the larger opening makes a rushed reload less fiddly.
The included green gas magazine holds 28 rounds. That's a useful capacity for a secondary weapon and suits the Hi-Capa character nicely. The same gas reservoir provides the pressure needed to fire the BB and operate the blowback action, so temperature will have an effect on performance. Like other green gas pistols, the 789+ will generally cycle more strongly in warmer conditions than it will on a freezing winter morning.
The controls also include ambidextrous safety levers. Having a safety on both sides makes the pistol friendlier to left-handed airsofters and can also be useful when changing hands around cover. The listed firing arrangement is safe and single shot, keeping everything straightforward. No unnecessary fire selector gymnastics here.
Double Bell has also fitted an adjustable hop-up. The hop system applies backspin to the BB and helps extend its useful flight by reducing how quickly it drops. Adjusting it correctly for your chosen BB weight can make a noticeable difference. Too little hop and shots start falling short; too much and they'll curve upwards. A few minutes on the range finding the sweet spot is time well spent.
The gas blowback system is a major part of the attraction. Every shot sends the slide rearwards before it returns ready for the next BB. You feel that movement through the grip, accompanied by the mechanical snap that makes GBB pistols so satisfying to use. It isn't firearm recoil, obviously, but compared with a non-blowback BB pistol there's much more happening in your hands.
Once the last BB has been fired, the slide remains locked open. Apart from adding realism, this is genuinely useful because you know immediately that the magazine is empty. Hit the extended magazine release, insert a fresh mag through that enlarged magwell, release the slide and you're back in business. Simple and intuitive.
The black finish works particularly well with the Baba Yaga styling. This isn't meant to resemble a completely standard duty pistol. The Hi-Capa/2011-style platform, competition-inspired controls and enlarged magwell give it a heavily customised appearance. It's the sort of airsoft handgun that gets noticed when you put it down on the safe-zone table.
Of course, this particular 789+ package isn't solely about what happens on the field. The deluxe collector presentation is a large part of its character. Double Bell includes JW themed props such as the Continental card, pencil and coins alongside the pistol. Put everything together in the supplied case and it becomes a proper display set rather than simply a standalone gas pistol with a few loose accessories.
That's likely to appeal to two slightly different groups. Film-inspired replica collectors get a complete themed package that looks the part on display, while airsofters still get a functional green gas sidearm underneath it all. There's no requirement to leave this one sitting untouched in its case. The 28 round magazine, adjustable hop-up, blowback action and competition-style controls are all practical features when you actually take it skirmishing.
Maintenance follows the usual routine for a full metal gas blowback airsoft pistol. Keep the slide rails and moving surfaces clean, apply suitable lubricant sparingly where needed and pay attention to the seals and valves in the gas magazine. More lubricant isn't necessarily better. Mix excessive oil with dust and dirt and you can create a horrible paste inside the pistol, which isn't doing the moving parts any favours.
It's worth treating the magazine properly too. Gas magazines contain valves, seals and a pressurised gas reservoir, so they're more complicated than a basic AEG magazine. Avoid dropping one directly onto its feed lips or valves, and inspect the seals if it has been stored for a long period. A little routine care saves plenty of head-scratching later.
As a skirmish secondary, the Double Bell 789+ has a useful combination of features. The enlarged magwell assists reloads, the extended release is easy to reach, the ambidextrous safeties suit either hand and the adjustable hop allows you to tune the pistol for your ammunition. Add the 28 round capacity and blowback action and you've got considerably more than a display prop.
For collectors, meanwhile, it's the complete package that makes this version interesting. The black Baba Yaga pistol has plenty of visual character by itself, but the case, coins, pencil, card and other supplied pieces turn it into something you can display as a set. Open the case and everything immediately makes sense together.
One specification worth noting is magazine capacity. The supplied information for this particular Double Bell 789+ lists the included gas magazine at 28 rounds. Some descriptions of similar Baba Yaga-style pistols quote different capacities, but 28 rounds is the stated figure for this model. The supplied product information also places the pistol within the 301–350 FPS category rather than providing a single guaranteed chronograph reading. With any green gas airsoft gun, actual velocity can vary according to temperature, gas pressure, BB weight and other conditions.
Overall, the Double Bell 789+ JW3 Baba Yaga GBB Pistol in Black manages to sit comfortably in two camps. It's a usable Hi-Capa-style gas blowback sidearm with the controls and features needed for skirmishing, but it's also a much more interesting display piece than your average boxed airsoft handgun. The deluxe collector presentation adds the theatre; the working GBB system makes sure there's substance underneath it.
