Description.
The Cybergun Auto-Ordnance Thompson M1928 "Chicago Typewriter" is an Airsoft AEG for players who want something with considerably more character than another modern black carbine. Officially licensed by Auto-Ordnance and manufactured by King Arms, this full-size Rifle recreates the famous M1928 Thompson with an alloy receiver, ribbed barrel, real wood furniture and deep engraved markings. It's a substantial airsoft gun too, measuring approximately 84cm long and weighing around 3.45kg. Pick it up and there's no mistaking that old-school Tommy Gun heft.
Starting at the muzzle, you get the distinctive M1928 "Cutts" compensator. On the original firearm this was intended to help control muzzle rise during automatic fire; here, its main job is completing that unmistakable Chicago Typewriter profile. It's pinned to the front sight block rather than sitting on a conventional threaded muzzle, so fitting a tracer or mock suppressor isn't as straightforward as it is on a modern electric rifle. For this particular replica, though, replacing the Cutts compensator almost feels like putting alloy wheels on a steam locomotive. It rather misses the point.
Behind it is the tapered 10.5-inch outer barrel with the cooling ribs associated with the M1928. The fixed blade front sight works with a particularly nice Lyman-style rear sight. For close-range shooting there's an open notch, while flipping the ladder sight upwards gives you an aperture which can be adjusted for windage and elevation. It's far more elaborate than the sights found on most modern airsoft rifles, but that's part of the Thompson experience.
The vertical front grip is made from real wood, as are the pistol grip and fixed stock. The finish shows off the natural grain rather than trying to imitate timber with plastic, and that makes a noticeable difference in the hands. The broad pistol grip incorporates the characteristic finger ridge, while the stock drops down behind the receiver to provide the correct sight line. Its length of pull feels long compared with a modern submachine gun, particularly if you're used to adjustable stocks, but once shouldered it makes sense.
The receiver is alloy with a matt dark-grey finish rather than a modern jet-black coating. Look across the top and you'll find the centrally mounted charging handle, while the right side houses the mock ejection port and rotary HOP-up adjustment. Pulling the charging handle back gives a satisfying metal-on-metal movement and provides access to the HOP-up. Turning the rotary adjuster changes the backspin applied to your BBs, allowing you to tune their flight for a flatter trajectory. A 0.25g BB is the suggested weight for this airsoft rifle.
The receiver markings deserve a mention. The Auto-Ordnance trademarks are properly engraved rather than being cheap-looking printed decoration, including the period-style company markings across the receiver. It's a small detail on paper, but on a historical replica it matters. A Thompson without convincing markings always looks like it's forgotten to put its trousers on.
Controls are wonderfully old-fashioned. There are separate selector levers on the left side of the receiver, with one controlling SINGLE and FULL AUTO and the other acting as the safety. The paddle-style magazine release also sits on the left and is pushed upwards to release the magazine. When inserting a magazine, lining its groove up with the front of the trigger guard guides it into position and helps produce a firm fit with minimal movement.
Internally, the Thompson follows the established Tokyo Marui-style design and uses an alloy Version 6 gearbox. Inside are 18:1 ratio steel gears running on 9mm ball bearing bushings, driven by a standard short-shaft AEG motor. An in-line MOSFET improves electrical efficiency and helps reduce the chance of trigger lock-up during repeated semi-automatic firing. The inner barrel and HOP-up bucking also follow standard TM AEG specifications, which is useful news if you decide to upgrade the gun later.
Battery space is hidden inside the fixed wooden stock and accessed through the butt plate. There's plenty of room compared with most compact AEGs, with block, stick and crane/nunchuck battery configurations supported. The gun is rear-wired with a Deans connector, and a 7.4V 1500mAh LiPo is the recommended setup.
The supplied 450-round wheel-wound drum magazine completes the look nicely and gives you plenty of ammunition for longer games. The platform is also compatible with Cybergun and King Arms Thompson AEG magazines, so you're not restricted to running the drum. Stick magazines can make sense for a more military-inspired loadout, while the drum is the obvious choice if you're chasing the classic Prohibition-era Chicago Typewriter appearance.
This isn't an Airsoft AEG designed to disappear into a sea of M4s. The M1928 is big, heavy and deliberately old-fashioned, and that's exactly why it's enjoyable. For WWII loadouts, historical collections or simply an airsofter who fancies turning up with something different, the combination of real wood, metal construction, licensed markings and proven Version 6 internals gives this Thompson considerably more substance than just good looks.
