Description.

The Ares Mutant AMM13 EFCS AEG in Dark Earth is a thoroughly modern electric rifle built around the Ares electronic fire control system. Rather than simply dressing up a conventional M4-style platform, Ares has given the AMM13 its own character, with an angular receiver, modular front end and a useful mix of nylon fibre, aluminium and metal components. As an airsoft rifle, it sits nicely between a conventional carbine and a longer field AEG, measuring 820mm with the stock collapsed and 900mm fully extended.

Starting at the front, the AMM13 uses a CNC machined aluminium handguard. This gives the front end a reassuringly substantial feel without making the whole airsoft gun unnecessarily cumbersome. One of the more interesting parts of the Mutant design is its quick-change barrel and handguard arrangement. Ares offers the platform with different handguard and barrel lengths, so the system has been designed with modularity in mind rather than treating the front assembly as an afterthought. Up top you'll find a full-length Picatinny rail, giving you a straightforward mounting point for a red dot, scope or other compatible sighting equipment.

You don't need an optic straight away, either. Ares fits adjustable flip-up sights at both ends. Fold them down when running an optic or flip them into position when you want a simple mechanical sighting setup. It's a small detail, but a useful one. Nothing worse than getting your new Airsoft AEG out and immediately realising you need another bit of kit before you can comfortably aim it.

Move back to the receiver and the AMM13's main attraction is tucked away inside: the programmable E.F.C.S. reinforced gearbox. EFCS stands for Electronic Firing Control System and gives the trigger and gearbox electronic control rather than relying solely on a traditional mechanical trigger arrangement. The standard selector provides safe, semi-auto and full-auto operation. With a compatible Electronic Gearbox Programmer, the fire modes can also be customised. For an airsofter who likes configuring their equipment rather than accepting whatever came out of the box, that's a genuinely useful feature.

The gearbox itself is made from cast zinc alloy and includes a quick spring release system. That makes spring access considerably less involved than on older gearbox designs where changing the spring could turn into an evening spent surrounded by screws, gears and increasingly colourful language. Driving the gearbox is a high torque flat motor, while the adjustable hop-up lets you tune the backspin applied to your 6mm BBs to suit BB weight and achieve a flatter flight path.

At the rear sits an adjustable retractable stock. Apart from changing the overall length from 820mm to 900mm, this lets you set the rifle up around your arm length, clothing and playing style. Fully shortened, the AMM13 becomes handier when working through buildings and tighter woodland. Extend it and you gain a more conventional shoulder position for longer outdoor engagements. At 2620g, there's enough weight here to feel substantial without turning the rifle into something you'll resent carrying halfway through a skirmish.

Ares supplies the AMM13 with its newer Amoeba 140-round mid-cap magazine. A mid-cap feeds without the winding wheel and loose-BB rattle associated with traditional high-cap magazines, making it a popular choice for players who prefer quieter movement and more realistic magazine changes. Battery compatibility is stated as 7.4V to 11.1V, giving this AEG useful flexibility when choosing a suitable battery setup.

Overall, the Mutant AMM13 is an interesting choice if you want a BB Gun that feels recognisably AR-inspired without looking like another copy-and-paste M4. The EFCS gearbox is the technical highlight, while the aluminium handguard, modular barrel system, adjustable stock and 140-round mid-cap make the rest of the package equally practical. It's particularly well suited to an airsofter who wants an electronic AEG with plenty of adjustment straight from the box, but still wants scope to personalise the setup later.
