It is located in the space between the piston and the air nozzle, and its primary function is to create a tight airtight seal between the cylinder's walls. A sudden and seemingly unexplainable decline in output FPS can generally be attributed to a poor air-seal, and the cylinder head component is a good place to begin your investigation into the reason for the issue. It is important that the air nozzle be able to move freely on the end of the cylinder head, and that there be a good seal between the edges of the cylinder head and the cylinder itself. The degree of effectiveness that varies from cylinder head to cylinder head is one reason why a double o-ring is typically the recommended option.
